Wars of the Roses Game |
Lead | |
|
I've been reading a lot of medieval literature lately for a class, and it's put an idea in my head for a game. I don't see this game happening any
time soon, as we may have Gloria on the horizon, but would you all have any interest on a game based on the Wars of the Roses in 15th Century England? The game
would have a micro-focus so as not to have big chunks of the world (or even Europe) empty and having to be run by the admin. I think the game would pick up
sometime shortly before the Duke of York first marches on Henry VI. Players would each play a feudal lord, initially loyal to either the House of York or House
of Lancaster. The Duke of York and Henry VI/Margaret of Anjou would be NPCs (as well as Scotland, France, and Burgundy). Given the behavior of the nobility
during the Wars, players would be able to scheme and deal without it being gamey or ahistorical, so we could see plenty of shady deals and backstabbing. ^_^
Also, I think the feudal period could provide for some interesting game mechanics in how armies are raised and deployed as well as interactions with the NPC
powers and The Church, and maybe also some sort of peerage system the players in which the players would move, with resulting advantages and responsibilities
coming with acquiring different titles, lands, etc. So, if there's any interest out there, lemme know.

That sounds like fun Trav, id certainly be interested.
There will be whining though about not being able to play anyone, but as you probably know I think smaller maps are the way to go for games that hope to be realistic. We should do a countdown until someone bitches about not being able to play a Japanese Daimyo. Speaking of which, there was a game once many moons ago that Livia played and showed to me. It was called "Two Worlds" it was basically a nationsim based on the medievel England (I think war of the roses period) and medievel Japan (nation at war period). I didnt play but from what I read it was a really good game with some high quality roleplaying and interesting political manuevering. I bring this up, because perhaps she still has a link or has backed up the rules (given her compulsive need to back things up (which I share) a real possibility) and you could borrow ideas and rules from them to save yourself time and energy in the setup. At the very least she might be able to give some advice on what worked and what didnt in that game rules wise. Oh yes and as I recall the Japan part was much less popular and eventually scrapped to try to consoldiate the admins attention. Anywho I think this is a great idea and I hope you do it, if I can help out let me know how. |

Hi ya Trav. MIke told me you were looking for some information about a similar game. Good luck with the one you are contemplating.
The Two Worlds Apart game was by Adam and MdeCrevecour in 2005. The game was more complicated than it needed to be but was def a different game than what passes as a usual nationsim. So I guess I would say err on the side of making it simpler and you can always make it more complex. This link should take you to the directory where you can access the game files I saved. http://webpages.charter.net/aoc/TWS/Rules1.doc Ask Mike for the username and password.
